Author Favorites: Historical Romances Amazon Book ReviewWho better to ask for historical romance recommendations than masters of writing historical romances?

Beverly Jenkins, Grace Burrowes, Laura Lee Guhrke, and Katharine Ashe share their favorites from among a wealth of marvelous stories that wowed readers this year.

An Extraordinary Union by Alyssa Cole

The Civil War is one of my favorite time periods and Cole's An Extraordinary Union knocks it out of the park. Detailed history, a superb plot, and a remarkable heroine of color make this one a keeper.

Beverly Jenkins's upcoming novel, Tempest, (January 2018) is set in the old West with a mail-order bride who gets more than she expected.

Grace Burrowes

A Duke in Shining Armor by Loretta Chase

I just got a copy of Loretta Chase's A Duke in Shining Armor, and oh, it's lovely. Sparkling dialogue, signature Loretta Chase wit, a lovely—"tall, dark and exasperating"—duke, and a heroine who is his match in every way. Loretta Chase has long been a keeper author for me. Her prose alone would put her on my top shelf, but she has the knack for blending in the interesting historical tidbits at just the right moment to add depth to the world, while the plot and character development gallop from scene to scene. I can't wait for the next Dis-Graceful Duke!

Grace Burrowes's most recent historical romance novel is No Other Duke Will Do (November 2017).

Laura Lee Guhrke

An Affair with a Notorious Heiress by Lorraine Heath

My favorite romance of 2017? Lorraine Heath’s An Affair with a Notorious Heiress, because I love romances where the hero falls for a woman he thinks is all wrong for him. The Marquess of Rexton has very specific standards for his future wife, and the notorious, scandal-ridden Tillie doesn’t meet any of them, and yet…he just can’t help falling in love with her. Who can resist a story like that, especially from an amazing writer like Lorraine Heath?

The next novel in Laura Lee Guhrke's Dear Lady Truelove series is The Trouble with True Love, available at the end of January 2018.

Katharine Ashe

An Extraordinary Union by Alyssa Cole

Alyssa Cole’s An Extraordinary Union was so good I literally wept with joy while reading it. Set during the Civil War, it’s got a brilliant, beautiful black heroine risking her life as a Union spy, and a deliciously sexy white hero disguised as a Confederate soldier. That he not only respects her but is turned on by her intelligence and bravery is unbelievably hot. Their perilous tumble into love, woven into actual history, is breathtaking. I couldn’t put this book down

Katharine Ashe's latest novel is The Devil's Duke, and she also has a novella in the anthology At the Christmas Wedding, with Maya Rodale and Caroline Linden.
