Books We Are Talking About

Fall is a glorious time for books. Perfect reading weather is starting to move in (colder, darker, eventually snowier... or rainier in the Pacific Northwest). Big books are being released weekly. And awards season is kicking in. All of these details have had an effect on the books we are talking about at Amazon. Here are some of those books. Maybe you'll find something of interest.

Wolves of Eden: A Novel by Kevin McCarthy - It's early November, and our Best Books of the Month are starting to become available to readers. Just this week, half of our top 10 November picks were published. One of those books is the novel Wolves of Eden, which Senior Editor Seira Wilson describes as " a riveting fusion of mystery, historical fiction, and western." It is a favorite of many at Amazon books and we're excited to see readers' reactions to the book.

The Formula: The Universal Laws of Success by Albert-László Barabási - Another book on our Best of the Month list is The Formula. We don't pick a lot of business books for our Top 10, but this one resonated because of the way it looks at success. The Formula, despite its title, is not just a How-to. Barabási takes a look at the entire concept of success, pointing out that there's a difference between accomplishment and success (i.e. success depends as much on how others view us as it does on our inherent abilities). This is a fun and thoughtful read.

Dark Sacred Night (A Ballard and Bosch Novel) by Michael Connelly - If you look to the top of this week's Charts Most Read: Fiction list, you will find Michael Connelly's latest novel, which is the first Ballard and Bosch book. I caught up with him this week to talk about the book, the fifth season of his show, and even his upcoming podcast.

Jade City (The Green Bone Saga) by Fonda Lee - The World Fantasy Convention was held last weekend, and the World Fantasy Awards were handed out. There was actually a tie for best novel. You can see all of the nominees and winners here.

My Sister, the Serial Killer: A Novel by Oyinkan Braithwaite - One of the books I talked about the last time I talked about the books we are talking about was Oyinkan Braithwaite's novel My Sister, the Serial Killer, which we selected as our Debut Spotlight for November. It has just been announced as the #1 Indie Next Pick for December. Well-deserved!

Florida by Lauren Groff - The National Book Awards are being handed out in New York next week. The 2018 list of books is widely varied and difficult to handicap (although we all have our favorites). You can learn about the shortlist for fiction here and the shortlist for nonfiction here.

Friday Black by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah - As well as putting on the National Book Awards, the National Book Foundation brings us their 5 Under 35 program, which features young, frighteningly talented authors to make us all feel unsuccessful and talentless. That said, they are also the future of literature, and one of those authors, Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah, is a guy I can't stop talking about.
