Books for Living by Will Schwalbe - A wonderful, passionate paean to reading. A celebration of books and their place in our lives, as entertainment, distraction, inspiration, tools and joys. A wonderful read from a wonderful writer (and reader!).

What Happened by Hillary Rodham Clinton - A rigorously honest look inside the heart and mind of this presidential candidate, and a stunning firsthand look at not just a campaign, but the collapse of what seemed inevitable. A powerful postmortem that also serves as a call to action. Some wound licking, some ass kicking, lots of soul searching and guilt, but also funny and warm and hugely inspiring. A thing of rare beauty.

Collected Poems by W.H. Auden - OK, this is a bit of cheat, since I am constantly reading and re-reading his poetry. His elegies to Yeats and Melville in particular have served as inspirations for my own books, but don’t miss "Musee des Beaux Arts" and "Autumn Song" (Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone/…).
