I'll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson

CroppedForABR225HI've always loved book clubs, it's fun to get together and hear other people's take on the same story. Sometimes parts of a novel that I'm raving about are the same ones that totally annoy someone else, and then there are those shared moments of, wasn't it great when...

For myself and the other editors over here in our cozy office cave, we are always reading upcoming books but I've often thought it would be great if we had a book club of our own, where we could choose a title that came out a year ago or even longer if we wanted, and then connect with readers from cities large and small. And now we've got one. The Amazon Editors' Young Adult Book Club has begun, and our inaugural pick is one of my favorite reads of last year, Jandy Nelson's I'll Give You the Sun.

I'll Give You the Sun is a book that has a lot to talk about--the narrators are twins Noah and Jude, and the story transitions in time through their voices, from when they were thirteen to sixteen, and the mistakes, self discovery, love, pain, change, that takes them from one end to the other in their relationship with each other and themselves.  It's a beautifully written novel and I was not surprised when it took home the 2015 Printz award earlier this year. It is also one of the titles we chose for our 100 Young Adult Books to Read in a Lifetime list.

Jandy Nelson is a delightful and gifted writer, and when we told her that her book was to be our inaugural pick she sent back a really lovely note, which you can read on the book club page.  She is also an author who loves her readers and has agreed to do a Q&A for us, so please send your questions for Jandy by May 30th, either by email at yabookclub@amazon.com or add them to the discussion on our Goodreads group. On June 15th we'll post her answers to a selection of them here on the Amazon Book Review and on the Goodreads group page.  One other thing you should know about--the publisher of I'll Give You the Sun is hosting a giveaway on Goodreads where you can enter to win one of ten copies of the book between now and May 19th.

Because we are starting mid-May, I'll Give You the Sun will serve as our book club pick for May/June and we'll announce the July book next month. Looking forward to hearing from you about our first read and more books in the months to come.
