Jenna Bush Hager's favorite reads of 2020

As a former first daughter, and granddaughter, and the co-anchor of the TODAY show, Jenna Bush Hager has spent much of her life in the spotlight, but she is also an avid reader and a best-selling author. Hager's most recent book is Everything Beautiful in Its Time: Seasons of Love and Loss, a moving collection of essays about her beloved grandparents and a remembrance of the challenging year in which she lost three of these influential figures in her life.

This mother of three is, as many of you already know, the creator of the TODAY #ReadWithJenna book club, and it is there that Hager turns her own spotlight on great books. Here are four she loved this year and why.

A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara

A profound coming-of-age tale about heartbreak, friendship and the journey to escape our past. This book—and it’s cast of characters—consumed me.

Leave the World Behind by Rumaan Alam

A magnificent story about two families who are forced to come together after a weekend gone wrong. This story’s suspense drives the plot, while it touches upon race, family and faith. Leave the World Behind also happens to be October’s Read With Jenna pick!

An American Marriage by Tayari Jones

A beautiful love story that taught me so much about what it means to love and to be loved. American Marriage is an intimate portrayal of a young African American couple whose marriage is tested when the husband is accused of a crime he didn’t commit.

Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi

Gifty is a character that I wish I could sit down and have dinner with. She struggles with her family’s history of mental illness and addiction by studying the brain, all on a quest to understand her suffering. This book wraps science, faith, and family, into a poignant, beautifully written story. It also happens to be Read With Jenna’s September pick!
