Unique and special books for holiday gift giving

The holidays are my favorite time of year for finding beautiful, quirky, and wonderfully unique new books. These are gift books, perfect for the person who has it all, or for that person on your list with an interest that just might be captured in a special book they will love. Your friend the fashionista? Get her a gorgeous coffee table book from a favorite designer. The father-in-law who loves Star Wars? We've got the perfect book for him. Here are some of my favorites in the Quirky Reads and Coffee Table Gems category of this year's editors' holiday gift picks.

A Man & His Car: Iconic Cars and Stories from the Men Who Love Them by Matt Hranek

The book for the man who might be difficult to buy for, but has a car they love or covet. This beautiful slip-cased book has 80 personal stories of men and their cars, from Shaquille O'Neal who is passionate about trucks, to Kevin Costner and his 1968 Shelby Mustang GT350 convertible. Give this book to any man with car keys and a dream.

Also of note: A Man & His Watch: Iconic Watches and Stories from the Men Who Wore Them, one of our favorite gift picks last year.

Dogtography: A Knock-Your-Socks-Off Guide to Capturing the Best Dog Photos on Earth by Kaylee Greer

Do you know someone who has more pictures of their dog than their children or spouse? This is the book for them. Not your usual "cute pictures of dogs" book, Dogtography is a DIY guide for taking amazing photos of your favorite canine. Professional dog photographer Kaylee Greer gives tips and tricks on everything from how to get the best action shot, to capturing your dog's unique personality. A doggone great gift (could. not. resist.) for the dog owners on your list.

HRH: So Many Thoughts on Royal Style by Elizabeth Holmes

Perfect for anyone who has binge-watched The Crown or who tracks the new generation of royal fashionistas, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle. HRH chronicles the iconic style of the four most influential British Royals when it comes to fashion, giving each a dedicated section of the book. Prepare to be dazzled by Queen Elizabeth II; Diana, Princess of Wales; Catherine the Duchess of Cambridge; and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex. Make sure to wrap this one like it's going under the tree at Buckingham Palace.

GLORY: Magical Visions of Black Beauty by Kahran Bethencourt and Regis Bethencourt

This is one of those books that you can look through over and over, and see some new detail every time. The subjects in the 100 photographs are children, and the images tell a visual story celebrating Black culture and beauty through history and into the future. The creativity and detail in each photo is incredible, as are the essays about children that also fill the book. Beautiful and special, give this one to any young person in your life. Or their parents.

The MeatEater Guide to Wilderness Skills and Survival by Steven Rinella

After spending so much time at home, it's a refreshing idea to consider exploring the wide open wilderness (or going for a day-long boat outing) and the tips and tricks we will need to know. The host of the show MeatEater, Rinella offers instruction that combines age-old wisdom with tips on how and when to make use of modern technology. A fun and useful gift for pretty much anyone when you get down to it.

Rolling Stone: The Illustrated Portraits by Gus Wenner

This beautiful gift book covers some of the most notable people and events of the last 50 years as only Rolling Stone can. Pulling from five decades of original illustrations and cartoons, you'll find over 200 of Rolling Stone's most iconic images—from cover portraits and cartoons, to depictions of events we will never forget; accompanied by anecdotes from many of the artists and subjects. A coffee table book for your coolest friend.

Humans by Brandon Stanton

Brandon Stanton blew us all away with his first book, Humans of New York. It was so original—touching, funny and just plain powerful to look at. Now he's doing it again on an even larger scale with Humans; stories and photographs of people from across the globe, in over 40 different countries. Humans reflects our shared humanity in a beautiful book that is a pleasure to spend time with. Give this to anyone you love.
