Michael Connelly's favorite reads of 2020

Michael Connelly is a best-selling author, television and movie producer, and podcaster, and if you're looking for recommendations for thrillers to read, you should probably listen to him. I know I do. He is also the creator of Harry Bosch, Mickey Haller, and Renee Ballard, among many other memorable characters.

Connelly's latest novel is The Law of Innocence, which is the sixth Lincoln Lawyer novel. As Mickey is returning home after winning a big case, he gets pulled over. When the cops discover a body in his trunk, he's thrown in jail, and the bail is set so high he'll have to sit there for a while. Obviously, he's being framed—but by whom? Mickey not only sets out to prove himself not guilty, from jail no less, but he also needs to figure out who exactly is trying to put him away.

Blacktop Wasteland by S. A. Cosby

Blacktop Wasteland by S.A. Cosby may be the book of the year. It does what the best efforts in the crime genre do. It takes the crime story as a frame around a much bigger picture, a picture that reflects on our world. It is almost as if Cosby anticipated the social and racial upheavals that would sweep across our country this year.

These Women by Ivy Pochoda

These Women by Ivy Pochoda takes the serial killer novel and turns it sideways. It’s not so much about the tracking, identifying and capture of the killer. It is about five women who live and work in the kill zone, and their voices give this novel its deep grip on the reader.

The Big Goodbye: Chinatown and the Last Years of Hollywood by Sam Wasson

This book is a fascinating documentation of how the stars aligned in the making of a classic film during a short period in Hollywood when the film industry created many of the endearing and lasting classics that have defined a generation.
