Best Cookbooks of 2016

Appetites200Is it wrong to add floating bookshelves to the kitchen walls because the bookcases are already overflowing?  Yes, that's what it's come to at my house because there have been so many cookbooks this year that I just had to take home.

When it came down to deciding which cookbook would be number one of 2016, I chose Anthony Bourdain's Appetites, and here's why: 

1. The recipes work for both a casual cook and the foodie.  Case in point--the chapter on soups includes recipes for both Cream of Tomato Soup and Kuching-Style Laksa.

2. Appetites brings it with the production.  Ralph Steadman designed the cover and it's not something you'd expect to see on a cookbook these days, except it makes perfect sense on this one. Inside, there are gorgeous photos that aren't just food porn, but instead are fun, interesting, and creative.

3. The book is special. Not just for it's stylish ways and irreverent tone, but as a cookbook of global recipes that isn't trying to be like anything else out there.  The Dessert chapter is one page.  And the first line on that page says, Fuck Dessert.  Bourdain poses a good question here, even to someone like myself who always wants to see the dessert menu.  Why have dessert if you could just eat Stilton. And have a good glass of port with it.  He may be on to something...

This is the one baking book you want to have even if you only make cookies over the holidays and the occasional pie for Thanksgiving. If you have this cookbook and you think to yourself, hmmm...I wonder how hard it would be to make sweet rolls? you will already be on your way.
