The Oracle Year: A Novel by Charles Soule

If you woke up with 108 predictions in your head, what would you do? Sell the information to the highest bidder? Give it away? An ordinary twentysomething named Will Dando answers this very question in the pages of The Oracle Year, the debut novel from popular comic book author Charles Soule. When Dando anonymously posts a few predictions on a site he dubs “The Oracle,” it’s flooded with queries, all of them variations of three themes: “Will I get what I want?” “How can I get what I want?” “Why can’t I get what I want?” It’s not long before everyone, from everyday citizens to hellfire preachers, all the way up to the President of the United States, wants a piece of him. A story filled with twists and sly satire on faith and power, Soule’s novel prompts us to consider for ourselves the lure of fate versus free will.

The Song of Achilles: A Novel by Madeline Miller

Madeline Miller takes Homer’s classic tale of love and war and gives it a modern storytelling twist in The Song of Achilles. Patroclus and Achilles are the quintessential mismatched pair — a mortal underdog exiled in shame and a glorious demigod revered by all — and their bond of friendship turns to star-crossed love in Miller’s hands. Whether it’s staring down Achilles’ fearsome mother, Thetis, or standing on the battlefield of Troy, awash in blood and tragedy, Miller’s writing puts an exciting new spin on a familiar epic.

Chief Joseph & the Flight of the Nez Perce: The Untold Story of an American Tragedy by Kent Nerburn

The story of Chief Joseph and the near destruction of the Nez Perce tribe has been told many times, but Kent Nerburn approaches his subject with an engaging narrative style. Chief Joseph became both man and myth in the struggle to save his tribe from destruction at the hands of the U.S. military, and Nerburn looks at how that both helped and hurt his cause. Nerburn also goes beyond the surrender of the Nez Perce to bring their journey full circle, through a devastating eight-year exile in Indian Territory to their eventual return to the Northwest. A thoroughly researched account that adds layers of complexity to a pivotal moment in American history.

The Beginning of Everything by Robyn Schneider

The Beginning of Everything has all the hallmarks of a smart young adult novel that readers fall for long past the teen years. Ezra Faulkner had it all: a star athlete with a beautiful girlfriend, destined to be crowned homecoming king. But that was all before. Before a tragic accident, before the mysterious new girl captures his heart, before everything changed. A funny, tender-hearted, coming-of-age story about what happens when you stop being the person everyone expects, whether you mean to or not.
