Our picks from this month's Amazon First Reads selections

Every month, Amazon First Reads offers a collection of titles available a month early to readers. This month readers can select two new pre-release Kindle books for $1.99 or two free books if you’re a Prime member.

July's offerings include a Midwestern memoir of identity and home; “an instant book club classic” about a politician whose career is threatened when her past behavior is thrust into the public eye; a thrilling police procedural; and more. These are a few of our favorites of the month, but be sure to check out Amazon First Reads for the complete selection.

Tomboyland by Melissa Faliveno

Part memoir, part cultural reportage, Tomboyland, navigates the traditions, assumptions, and landscapes of the Midwest and the intersection between place and identity, home and belonging. As Melissa Faliveno’s editor wrote: “These essays offer both an elegy and a love song for the people who shape us—family, friends, mentors, our former selves, all of those whom we carry with us on our journey to becoming.”

Cleo McDougal Regrets Nothing by Allison Winn Scotch

Regret is hard. And for Cleo McDougal, a Senator and a single mom, it could destroy her dreams of the oval office. When an op-ed piece by an estranged friend goes viral, McDougal must face the consequences of her past and fess up to her actions—even those she can’t say out loud. Hard as this is, what she discovers about herself is far more important than her political reputation. Allison Winn Scotch’s editor calls this novel “an instant book club classic…As timely as this novel is right now, the themes would have resonated with me as much thirty years ago, and I know they will in the far-flung future.”

White Out by Danielle Girard

White Out is a twisting tale that blows over you like a blizzard: fast, enveloping, and full of blind spots sure to leave you guessing until the very end” is how Danielle Girard’s editor describes this page-turning whodunit of secrets, kidnapping, and murders in a small North Dakota town in the heart of winter. This story isn't over after the last page, White Out is the first book in a new series by the best-selling author of the Annabelle Schwartzman series.

Trust No One by Debra Webb

A double homicide and a missing woman lead a detective to unearth disturbing secrets in this gripping thriller. Debra Webb is written over 100 novels and her editor calls Trust No One “her finest yet.” Political intrigue, dark family secrets, betrayal and complicated characters fill the pages of this police procedural that is the first in a new series.
