6 highly anticipated true crime books

Dorothy Parker put it best when she said, “If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning.” And that goes a long way towards explaining why true crime titles like Bad Blood and I’ll Be Gone in the Dark have been hitting the bestseller lists regularly in the past couple of years. True crime books are nothing but horrible warnings. While getting caught up in the mayhem of MS-13 seems unlikely for most of us, getting lured into a fatal attraction scenario by a sociopath has historically been a hazard for the common man, or more likely, the common woman. In that case, true crime works as a training manual, showing us the signs to spot, the red flags to which we must pay attention if we are to avoid a similar fate.

But spectacle is a big part of the appeal too. There’s a reason why the phrase “if it bleeds, it leads” became the organizing principle in the news hierarchy. It’s morbidly fascinating to see the extent to which some people are wired not only to push the envelope, but to obliterate it. Much as we want to steer clear of those people—and true crime stories validate that impulse—we also don’t want to become those people. With that in mind, here are 6 true crime scenarios you will want to steer clear of—at least in real life. Reading about them on the other hand, may prove irresistible.
