Kids' books for the countdown to Christmas

This year I've noticed that holiday lights seem to be going up earlier than ever. Even at my house, we usually don't get to it for another week or so, but the day after Thanksgiving we were outside stringing lights on our trees, in need of some holiday cheer.

Regardless of masks, social distancing, and travel restrictions, kids are as eager as ever for Christmas. And this year there are many delightful new holiday books that will keep them dreaming of sugarplums in the weeks ahead. Here are some of my favorites:

5 More Sleeps ‘til Christmas by Jimmy Fallon

Late night host and best-selling author Jimmy Fallon is at it again with a sweet and charming picture book about a boy counting down the last five days until Christmas—and then starting all over again! 5 More Sleeps 'til Christmas is sure to be a new holiday favorite. Ages 3-6

Always Together at Christmas by Sara Sargent, illustrated by Mark Chambers

The book many parents are looking for this year, Always Together at Christmas speaks to the holiday as it looks in 2020, with physical distancing, and limitations on getting together with loved ones. A warm and thoughtful picture book that shows kids that the joy and spirit of the season is not lost, even if we can't be physically together. Ages 4-8

Grandma's Sugar Cookie by Rose Rossner, pictures by Kathryn Selbert

A brightly illustrated board book that celebrates the tradition of making cookies between a grandma and her beloved grandchild. Each page references a different kind of cookie—from snickerdoodles to macarons—and the book includes a sugar cookie recipe at the end. Perfect for sharing with little ones during the holiday season. Ages 5 and up

Santa and the Goodnight Train by June Sobel, illustrated by Laura Huliska-Beith

Now available in a board book for the youngest children, Sobel combines two favorite things: trains and Santa Claus, in a gloriously illustrated companion to The Goodnight Train. Santa gets up to some Christmas Eve antics, and little ones will have a wonderful time riding along to Dreamland. Ages: Baby-3

Christmas Parade by Sandra Boynton

With Boynton's signature style, this board book has plenty of noises and rhyming as toddlers join in on a Christmas parade. Boynton's beloved characters are all dressed up, ready for music, marching, and holiday fun. Ages 3-6

Meerkat Christmas by Emily Gravett

Sunny, the meerkat we first met in Meerkat Mail, is back in a Christmas companion book. Sunny wants to have the perfect Christmas, but in the Kalahari Desert where he lives, there is neither snow nor Christmas trees. So Sunny goes in search of Christmas around the world. Interactive holiday fun. Ages 4-8

Dinosaur Christmas! by Penny Dale

This latest installment in Penny Dale's dinosaur picture books finds Santa gets stuck in a snowstorm and it's dinosaurs to the rescue! They ride snowmobiles down a mountain and plow the road; whatever it takes to get Santa and his sleigh back on track. The perfect Christmas book for little dinosaur enthusiasts. Ages 2-5

Happy Narwhalidays by Ben Clanton

Best friends Narwhal and Jelly are back in an all new graphic novel featuring three holiday stories that have their own special twist. Author and illustrator Ben Clanton adds red to his usual color palate in celebration of the season, and fans of the Narwhal and Jelly books are in for a holiday treat with this one. Ages 6-9
