Anthony Bourdain 1956-2018

AnthonyBourdain_2016.jpgYou made us laugh, god did you make us laugh. You taught us about food; from the glory of a humble hamburger to the incandescent delicacy of the finest sushi.  You took us with you, behind the swinging doors of restaurant kitchens and on wild adventures around the globe, introducing us to people, places, and food we may never see on our own but experienced through your eyes and your meals. You were a gifted storyteller and gave us not only your own stories but those of others with the books you wrote and the books you published. We have basked in the glow of your irreverence, humor, and compassion. Anthony Bourdain, you will be missed...

Today I'm remembering how thrilled I was to meet Tony Bourdain at the Goldfinch Tavern here in Seattle, to talk about his then forthcoming cookbook, Appetites, and what a thoughtful and fun man he was to be around. That day remains one of my favorite moments as an editor here and I will always be grateful for it.  He was one of a kind.

Anthony Bourdain was the author of several books, including his memoir Kitchen Confidential, which quickly became a bestseller and put him on the road to stardom, and most recently Appetites: A Cookbook, a glorious full-color reflection of his personality in recipes.  In 2011 Bourdain got his own imprint with Ecco, a division of HarperCollins Publishing, and began to publish books that he felt passionate about across a wide range of genres.  Bourdain became a household name as the host of multiple television series, starting with A Cook's Tour on the Food Network in 2002, and continuing with his next three series on the Travel Channel; No Reservations, The Layover, and Parts Unknown.  He was filming the latest season of Parts Unknown when he passed away this morning, June 8.
