JasonSegelAuthorPhoto225_CreditMichaelMullerMovie star funny man Jason Segel first turned his screen writing talent to books with his Nightmares! series for middle graders.  Now he's gone out of this world in young adult with Otherworld. Yeah, I know, I'm no Jason Segel when it comes to writing comedy... But we loved his new YA series opener, and made it one of our best young adult books of November.

Segel's movies and books have a certain quirkiness and his own reading taste seems to follow suit. See Jason Segel's picks below, and look here for more celebrity favorites.

The Writer’s Journey by Christopher Vogler
This was the book I bought when I was 17 to teach myself how to write screenplays. I go back to it every time I start something new. Based on the work of Joseph Campbell, it’s filled with things you know instinctively, and that’s sort of the point. Vogler helps you put your ideas in the proper order and includes some handy diagrams.

Steal like an Artist by Austin Kleon
You can flip through this book in 30 min and be inspired by it for weeks. A helpful reminder that our ideas don’t come from nowhere and there is no shame in building on the things that have inspired you.

The Cows by Dawn O’Porter
I love this book. Funny, insightful, and perfectly uncomfortable, it was the only fiction I ended up reading this year and I picked a winner. You’ll love this.
