William ShatnerWhile Emmy-winning actor William Shatner is famous for being the original and definitive Captain James T. Kirk (sorry, Chris Pine), he's also a bestselling author, with almost 30 books under his belt. His books have ranged from science fiction to memoir, including last year's Leonard: My Fifty-Year Friendship with a Remarkable Man, about his relationship with Leonard Nimoy.

Shatner has another passion project: horses. A longtime breeder and horse lover, William Shatner started the Hollywood Charity Horseshow in 1990 to raise money for children and veterans. At the end of May 2017, Shatner released Spirit of the Horse, his book about the mythology of horses, heroic horses in both fiction and real life, and the enduring joys of working with horses.

Shatner told us which books he read of late that made an impact on him and why. Read on for his favorite recent reads.

Joseph Kanon writes a tightly packed, very realistic, exciting novel. I have read several of them, and they all carry a fast-paced story. A great suspense novel.

It’s unbelievable! For all who have sat and looked at trees and watched them dance in the wind and seen their beauty come to life in the spring and suddenly evolve to the fall, this book should make us step back in awe.
