Alicia Keys’s favorite recent reads

Alicia Keys is a 15-time Grammy Award-winning artist, songwriter, musician, and producer; she’s an entrepreneur, a successful actress, and a powerful force in the world of activism. In her new memoir More Myself (coming out March 31), Keys dives into her life – the challenging relationship with her father, the loss of privacy surrounding her romantic relationships, striving to be perfect, and more. Part autobiography, part narrative documentary, Keys' memoir takes readers on her own journey from a being a people pleaser to standing up for herself and discovering her own voice.

We asked Alicia Keys about what books she's loved recently and she graciously shared her picks with us:

Alicia Keys on books she's loved and the power of books:

Reading is something that I love so much. It's powerful, it's such a journey, and it takes you places that you maybe have never been before. For me as a writer, reading shows me the poetry and story lines that I want to write with. And I've been reading some good books lately.

Homegoing: A Novel by Yaa Gyasi

One of my favorites is called Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi. It's crazy good! It's quite a long book, but the author captures this passage of time over hundreds of years, different sides of the world, and the stories of different families and how they intertwine and interlace. It's unbelievable - it goes so fast and it's so much to capture, but she did a brilliant job. So if you haven't read that one, definitely read it.

Purple Hibiscus: A Novel by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

I also read a book recently called Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. She's phenomenal, and she's written so many beautiful books. Purple Hibiscus was also quite moving, about a family - a daughter, and a brother, a mother and a father - and these deep, intricate details of their life and the complexities of it all. You find yourself falling in love with this family and really being taken on their journey, their heartbreak, and their secrets - it is a beautiful and amazing read.

Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend

I also read a book with my sons Egypt and Genesis called Nevermoor by Jessica Townsend. That one is fantastical and mysterious, about powers and magic. It's really a fun one because it's such a crazy journey and such a cool read - so it's fun with the kids and fun for yourself too.

These are just a few books that I've been loving and sharing with my family - and now sharing with you. Enjoy!
