Amazon Charts: A Modern Reimagining of the Bestseller List

Adrian Liang on May 18, 2017

Today Amazon has launched Amazon Charts, a bestseller list that reflects not only what people are purchasing but what they are reading...regardless of format.

Updated weekly, Amazon Charts has two lists: The Top 20 Most Sold and the Top 20 Most Read. Both lists break out further into top 20 fiction and top 20 nonfiction categories, showing readers a total of 80 books on the Amazon Charts bestseller lists.

Amazon-charts.finalAs Amazon vice president David Naggar points out, "When friends make a book recommendation, they recommend books they are really reading and loving." The first list of its kind, Amazon Charts' Top 20 Most Read shows readers which books other Amazon customers are actually reading or listening to.

The Top 20 Most Sold list ranks books that are sold through Amazon and Audible as a print book, Kindle book, or audiobook, as well as books that are borrowed through Kindle Unlimited,, or Prime Reading subscription programs.

As people within the book business can tell you, some well-known bestseller lists add, remove, or re-rank books based on editorial decisions. In contrast, Amazon Charts reflects what people are purchasing and reading.

Some books on Charts include fun insights on how readers are reacting to those titles. For example, Paula Hawkins's new thriller, Into the Water, is #7 on the Most Read list and has an "All Ears" icon next to it, signifying that more people are reading it via audiobook than on Kindle. Sarah J. Maas's long-awaited A Court of Wings and Ruin is "Unputdownable" - a book that is finished faster by readers than similar books are.
