BonesBones: Brothers, Horses, Cartels, and the Borderland Dream by Joe Tone

Bones is the story of the brothers Trevino: Miguel, a powerful member of Mexico's feared Los Zetas drug cartel, while Jose is a Dallas bricklayer on the straight and narrow. So when Jose begins buying quarter horses and winning races, the feds take notice. Is Jose laundering money for his sibling? Tone's tale is a true crime book that reads like a thriller - vivid, illuminating, and more than a little bit scary.

You-PlayYou Play the Girl by Carina Chocano

Chocano brings to bear her experience as a widely published journalist and critic (of books and film) in this collection of essays examining what it has meant to be the "girl" through decades of pop culture, from Playboy magazine to Thelma and Louise to Frozen. It's not exactly news that women are most often relegated to secondary character status - reactors rather than actors - but Chocano's mix of memoir, humor, and insight nevertheless strikes chords.

BettencourtThe Bettencourt Affair: The World's Richest Woman and the Scandal That Rocked Paris by Tom Sancton

Heiress to a 40-billion dollar fortune, 94-year-old Liliane Bettencourt is the world's richest woman. She is now one if its most infamous, following the exposure an ambiguous, decades-long relationship with Parisian artist/photographer François-Marie Banier - one that exposed the L'Oréal company's dark secrets, including Nazi ties, Swiss bank accounts, and dubious dealings with France's highest office. As far as scandals go, it doesn't get much more salacious than The Bettencourt Affair.
