Jodi Picoult is a writer who does not shy away from difficult subjects. Her latest novel A Spark of Light is about reproductive rights. In past books she has addressed race, the death penalty, gay rights, and the right to die, among others. What's amazing about Picoult is that she can write about these subjects--which could be seen as dry nonfiction fodder--and humanize them. And through fiction she causes us to see facets that we might not otherwise see.
