His new book, A Column of Fire, is, of course, no different. The latest installment in his Kingsbridge series takes readers to 16th-century Europe and a city rent by the schism of Catholics and Protestants, and the looming threat of opportunistic, would-be tyrants.

The best nonfiction book this year is “Destined for War” by Graham Allison, about whether the USA will go to war with China. It sounds fanciful but Allison is worryingly convincing.

As part of my research I read Alexandre Dumas’s novel “La Reine Margot”, about the St Bartholomew’s Day Massacre in 1572, an event which is also dramatized in “A Column of Fire”. Dumas’s book is terrifically lively and Margot is a feisty heroine.
