James's A Brief History of Seven Killings is not an easy book, but it's a special feat in literature. Written as an oral history, using multiple voices, and set against an assassination attempt on Bob Marley that took place in the 1970s, the novel is violent, full of swearing, and long. It is also arguably a masterpiece. We're not alone in saying so: The book ended up on a multitude of best-of-2014 lists, and earned James the 2015 Man Booker Prize. Due this coming February, his next novel, Black Leopard, Red Wolf, is one of our most eagerly anticipated books of the coming year.
